You are probably wondering, What type of retreats are there?
What Type of Retreat is Right for You?
Retreats are a time to both get away and journey within.
Spiritual retreats and periods of communal separation from the day-to-day have been an integral part of Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Islamic communities for thousands of years. Spiritual retreats are also an integral part of many Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Sufi (Islamic) communities for thousands of years.
A retreat can either be a time of solitude or a community experience. Some retreats are held in silence, and on others, there may be a great deal of conversation, depending on the understanding and accepted practices of the host facility and/or the participant(s). Retreats are often conducted at rural or remote locations, either privately, or at a retreat center or on sacred ground. (From Wikipedia)
One of the biggest questions I get asked often from friends and clients is, what type of retreats are there? In my marketing strategy and branding work with retreat centers around the world, and in developing a getaway week for unconventional entrepreneurs, Trailblazer’s Retreat, I’ve experienced the variety and flavors of all type of retreats – from staycations to round-the-world adventure trips.
So if you are curious about what type or retreats there are, which is the best for you, and what elements of a dream retreat are essential for your next journey, here are some of the most popular options:
Receive pampering like the queen or king you are. Imagine – the smells and luxuries of oils and herbs that will lift your spirits. Massages, acupuncture, nutrition, yoga and meditation courses usually accent this type of retreat.
If you want your time away to be a truly relaxing and reinvigorating experience, there are so many types of spa retreats around the world. From Ayurvedic traditions of India to the Chinese Medicine principles, and Thai yoga massages, each culture has its own ways of restoring the body to balance and harmony. For a great spa retreat, find a culture and practice that appeals to your restoration needs. Or at least a gorgeous center that has gifted pampering practitioners.
You’re sleeping under the stars, camping in a village, treehouse, on an organic farm or boat. Fill your days with hiking, biking, swimming in the ocean, sea or lakes. Breathing in the fresh air. The picturesque natural beauty of this planet and all the different landscapes provide a new perspective, too. If these moments appeal to your sense of calm, consider re-charging on a nature retreat. Because there’s nothing more recharging than being surrounded by nature!
Think of days filled with beaches and pool time, surrounded by white sand, black sand, maybe pink sand? Do you want to surf, swim or boat while soaking up rays? Snorkel or SCUBA in the cool waters as you calm your internal waves. Additionally, you can venture to alternate locations like the jungle, that offer plenty of ways to catch those rays.
Do you prefer to wake up, pack a swimsuit and flipflops and just GO? If you dig the warmth, tropical locations (usually during peak and around peak season) are best for your retreat. Even though I have found, most jungle and rainforest cities have perfect weather all year round – the travel industries just try to trick you into coming when it’s pricey.
Are you stressed out from the hustle of your day-to-day? Is work or business overloading your brain, and is family overwhelming? If you’re looking for an escape, get away from it all to somewhere remote.
Get off the beaten path! It usually means fewer cars and less smog, and more peace and quiet. Many retreat centers are built in remote locations for just this reason – no power lines or car noises, just silence and stillness. These locations can be a bit of extra effort to get to, involving additional small plane flights, buses or private taxi rides. However, they’re usually worth the extra effort to powerfully unplug in paradise.
Retreats for Snow Bunnies/Mountain Men
If you relax the best while on an adventure, get your thrills skiing or snowboarding. You’ll spend your retreat deeply experiencing nature’s cool touch – perfect snow.
The climate of your retreat can be a deal maker (or breaker), so whether you’re an adrenaline seeker or prefer to cuddle by the fire, if you feel more yourself in the cold, stay true to that inclination in your next retreat.
Retreats for Spiritual Adventurers
Look within to heal wounds of the past and acquire tools to fight limiting beliefs and negative thoughts. A Spiritual retreat gives you the tools to experience inner growth. Spend your time away in meditation to find answers and unlock hidden truths inside of you. Learn to understand others and how we interact with fellow humans in relationships. Reflect on the ultimate journey of all: getting to know, understand and accept ourselves, as we learn to be our true self.
If you’re craving new spices and adventure with your taste buds, think about taking your palate on a getaway. Many retreats offer farm-to-table, locally sourced, and organic cuisine, specific to the destination.
A cleanse and detox at foodie retreat can be that chance. It’s a great way to transform your eating habits and hit the reset button. Take a deep dive into raw food, slow food, or healthy balanced foods. A foodie retreat can aid in healing your body and making space for your mind and soul, therefore helping make changes that will last a lifetime.
Retreats for Culture Enthusiasts
Do you long to immerse yourself in culture, instead of the typical snapshot experience of a visitor? Experience daily life in another country by meeting locals in local hangouts and exploring cultural activities. There are many countries that have authentic historical housing for retreats.
Cultural retreats allow you to walk away with a deeper understanding of and appreciation for a destination, not just for its beauty, but for its people, traditions, and communities.
Retreats for Animal Aficionados
Gaze at an animal in its natural habitation and feel your soul start to soften. Because getting closer to non-human friends gives us a new perspective on our inner life and interpersonal relationships. Vist an animal sanctuary, or save and injured and endangered species. Get up close and personal with creatures you’ve only seen in pictures. There are luxury safari retreats in many locations around the world. Many retreats also offer day trips from their locations to nearby animal sanctuaries.
