Today’s post is slightly different from my usual posts but I am sure you will love it. I love reading books and today I would like to share with you one of my favourite Russian stories by Leo Tolstoy and it’s called “The Pebble”. This story has been newly translated into English by Valentina Day (my mum) 🙂
One poor man came to a rich man and started to ask him for alms. The rich man didn’t give him anything and told him to go away. The poor man didn’t go away and stayed around. The rich man became very angry; he picked up a stone and threw it at the poor man.
The poor man took this stone, put it on his breast under his shirt and said: ”I will keep the stone here until the time comes when I can throw it at you.”
This time came. The rich man did something bad and he lost everything. He was put into prison. When he was taken to prison the poor man came to see him. He took the stone, which he had kept for a long time under his shirt, and wanted to throw it at the rich man.
Then he thought a little, threw the stone on the ground and said: ”I kept this stone for a very long time for nothing. When this man was rich and powerful I was afraid of him but now I only feel sorry for him.”
You probably think – How this story is relevant to any business? Will this help me to achieve anything? What I can learn from it? Well, the answer is YES and A LOT!
Yes, this story was written a long time ago but it was based on real life and we all can see this happening even now. I can relate to this story 100% and I’ll tell you why. When I was just starting with my business, I was looking for answers, help and support. I knew someone who could help me but that person chose not to. The answer was – I don’t have time for this and I don’t care what you do…..
Yes, I was upset but I carried on – it took time but I did it. A year ago, this person came to me for help. What did I do? I helped her in the best way that I could.
The moral of this story is never hold a grudge, always forgive people, be a giver, enjoy life and keep smiling. And you will be surprised what life will offer you.
