This week, I challenge hoteliers and general managers at boutique travel destinations to choose one task at a time. Release the appeal to overwhelm yourself and try to do everything in marketing all at once. Everything will suffer, if you spread your energy, time and resources to thin. As an entrepreneur, we can feel the pressure to hustle and perform. There is urgency to get heads in beds and make more revenue for your boutique hotel faster.
I advise that my clients do two powerful things to reverse the effects and stress of overwhelm.
First, start with one task at a time. Focus all of your energy and presence on it. Do your best not to be distracted by your laundry list of to-dos that also will need attention today. And by giving your full attention to the one task-at-hand, it will be completed quickly and efficiently.
Don’t believe give it a try for 24 hours. One task at a time, until completed. Attempt to not worry in the back of your mind about everything else that had to be done and just do the one thing. See how your productivity and marketing results improve.
Secondly, I see a lot of hotel staff and marketing professionals get stuck in their failures and mistakes. They are constantly living in fear of repeating the wrong moves they’ve made in the past. Whether it was a failed email campaign, ineffective Facebook ad set or just a wrong move that cost your hotel bookings, you can choose to grow and expand from mistakes, detours or missteps. Even though they may have knocked you down while marketing your boutique hotel or resort, you can now look at your mistake(s) with new eyes. Take a new perspective on why things turned out the way they did, without judging yourself. What can you learn and improve upon?
You are not a failure. Often when we get off course, or something goes wrong and fails. We attach that experience to ourselves. We identify as the failure ourselves, not just the situation or scenario.
At any moment this week while marketing your boutique hotel, you can choose to get refocused, aligned and back working on your project at hand. Whether its social media, email marketing, public relations or paid advertising, deep breath and recommit to why you began the task in the first place.
It’s simply a perspective shift. Maybe yesterday or last week, you went off-track. You perhaps made a decision that did not work to get more guests or promote your property well. Now ask yourself: “How can I be empowered and learn from my miss-take to undertake the next bigger things for my retreat center or hotel?”
If you even felt like you were defined by or defining yourself by your mistakes, release that belief.
Deep breath. You choose if you carry that with you into another week of work or into the next marketing plan
Failure and mistakes do not have to be attached. Mistakes are there to remind us where we can grow into better hotel marketers and shift the ways we work, the decisions we make and how successful our boutique hotel or resort is.
