Let’s be honest, many of us started our own businesses because we don’t exactly like following the rules. It’s okay, entrepreneurship is the place for rule breakers! But that very stubbornness that leads most of us out on our own can also hold us back and keep us small for far too long.
Today I want to share one of the top ways to grow your business and get big: hiring help. No, not asking a buddy to work on some things for free in exchange for some coaching time or free coffee but a real, professional agreement.
And I’m a gal who loves coffee!
I totally get the fears around this shift; hiring is a big step and there’s a lot of legal, financial and leadership worries that can get in the way. Hiring is a statement of intent
When you begin looking for an employee or contractor in your business you are sending many messages but the primary one is “I am ready for growth and expansion.” Hiring is not saying that you can’t handle your business because you’re incompetent but that you’re growing and need more support to help more clients.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that after hiring two new VAs in April I was able to reach a larger audience by writing more content on systems and hiring for online business owners – at last count nearly 60 media contributions.
Hiring is a process of shifting focus
When it comes to hiring support all of a sudden you have options that were not previously available. Instead of slugging through all those tasks you hate doing you can hand it off with a little instruction, freeing up your time for the things you love.
Now there is the risk that that stubborn part of you will insist, “I can do it all myself!” and I’m here to tell you that you could, if you’re content to stay small and have a lesser impact on the world. If that’s you, it’s okay! But I believe you’re here because you want to play BIG and the number one to grow is to shift your focus to the things you do better than anyone else and let your team handle the rest.
Without a team handling many of my admin tasks I would not be blogging as often (or guest blogging!), I’d have fewer finished programs and products and smaller lists of leads and clients.
Hiring is not about ego
Does it make you feel nervous to think about having a team? For some it’s the confusion between the ego of being a boss and the natural evolution to becoming a leader. As the leader and coach of your team you’re guiding a group around common goals.
Hiring should not be about feeding your ego and there are two things I do when I’m working with my team to remind myself of this fact. First, I make a point to show my appreciation and tell them “thank you” often. I share how their help has freed me up to work with more clients and develop more content. Second, I love to share about the results my clients are getting and building up the team pride to show these VAs that they’re part of that success.
If hiring a team were about my ego then it would all come back to me, me, me and how good this makes me look. Instead, the focus is all on the service because I know the more our team works effectively together, the bigger impact we can have in service to others.
